Jam session review of Sunday 8th December 2024
Some jazz jam sessions surpass expectations, soar into the realms of proper music, delight their audiences, leave the musos gasping at how amazing they were, and leave us all waiting eagerly for the next one...
Others waddle along at The Cornerstone, as was the case last week - with a mere sixteen musos who despite themselves, and lacking a few of the amazing regulars, still managed to blow the mitts off a toon or seven, swing as hard as ever, and, on occasion, and possibly by mistake, play some real jazz.
A quiet, therefore, arvo, and now that we have stopped poking fun at our superiors, one that had its own pleasures:
Elegant piano from a genial Mr Curtis,
Some blues tinged fireworks from Mr Ress,
The Captain and The Keith on sax,
All sorts of vocals from Reggie (she brought most of her band and we hope they all come again),
Deb, Kevin, and Debra D'Ohio lunging between delight and disaster, Chrissie as good as ever.
On the Bass strait, Ivan as reliable as ever, and newcomer Paul (reggie's mob) easy to play with.
Fewer guitarists than usual, with Neville smoking it, and Mike playing both quieter and better than the usual crew.
And on drums, Bruce, Sala, and Michael Frost all of whom made for a solid backline all arvo.
Highlights of the day probably included a wobbly start and a confident finish to Watch What Happens (Michel Legrand), Reggie's take on L.O.V.E., and Sala on drums. Props to the latter, who has run a weekly gig in Wheeler's Hill for years.
