THE CURATE'S EGG

Jam Session Review for 17th August

Another remarkably select line-up of the good, the bad, the ugly, the desperate, the ever optimistic, quiet, loud, and awful - 19 jammers for this one, and by general consensus, a rather higher standard than previous weeks - so things, when not looking sideways or down  or wherever, are looking up...

We started with quite a few of the local gentry (by their own estimation - it is Hawthorn after all) rushing to finish their lunch and escape, followed perhaps by several  serious musicians who had discovered they were not at the local Centrelink after all, followed by a rather pleasant afternoon's music making.

Probably the pick of the day would be Paolo (gtr) and Alfred (drums) getting together on Estate - a 1960 song by Bruno Martino who was born in Rome in November 1925, and died there in June 2000 so he obviously didn't get about much. Had he not composed Estate, he would have been remembered for his other composition Dracula Cha Cha Cha, which is not much of an epitaph, but I digress.

So ... a welcome return (years later) by Libby, a coupla sweet toons from Rose, Andre (drums)  making an occasional appearance, and a first try out by Carolina - assiduously videoed by Hamza - all a triumph of enthusiasm and we hope they come again.

Towards the end of the session, we tried the guitar amp facing back, so the other guitarists (Nev, Mike and Ash) could hear it  - seemed to make quite a difference!

The Good Captain, the lone saxophonist (and we can't remember the last time that happened) had the good sense to wrench the stumps from the pitch pretty much at 6 o'clock on the dot, and we all got home, well satisified in the main, for an early tea.

And the Curate's Egg? Parts of it were excellent.

Next week, synchronised bagpipes, Colombian nose flutes and the Flight of the Bumblee, or perhaps, more of the same with some Carlton Daft and malicious gossip as a side...Stick to the black notes - they are cheaper...
