Review of a packed house: The Gov on 22nd June 2025

The joint was heaving all arvo: The sessions are getting busier: 39 musos fronted, and 33 played - we simply ran out of time - but what went down was pretty good.

A Class Act: Roger Clark, who has been less than well, arrived sax in hand, and played with Ivan (bass) and Lisette (keys). Roger started the original Jam Session at Dizzy's, which was the fore - runner of the Melbourne Jazz Jammers sessions. Still a class act.

The other Pick of the day: Fiona and Deb as a vocal duo, by a country mile. Props also to the band behind them, (led by Philip on piano) as this was the best things sounded all day

Les Autres: A fine and assorted bunch: drummer Chris: somewhat reluctant and rusty at first, but got better and better: as he should: turns out he is VCA trained majoring in jazz drumming. Then Simon on double bass: turns out he has quite some experience (he said mainly in Trad, but it all sounded good to me), then Jo (clari) Philip (trombone) and Tonino (flute) gave Ivan and the rhythm section a workout on La Mer: a fine song but it took a while for the tide to go out...and last, but not least, Martin Case (sax) brought along a young drummer Lauren to play All Blues: what it lacked in polish was more than made up for in enthusism. All of them, we hope, will come again.
